This class is for anyone who wants more ease and grace in their movements, and concurrently have less pain and greater movement freedom throughout their life. Somatic Integration is the process of learning slow and gentle exercises, which eventually become familiar and can be integrated into your daily routine. A somatic movement, generally speaking, is one which is performed consciously with the intention of focusing on the internal experience of the movement rather than the external appearance or result of the movement. The specific movements within a session of Somatic Integration are designed to bring structural awareness, mobility and integrity, to your system. Many people find somatic integration movement methods to be highly effective in relieving chronic pain, improving bodily function, and recovering from common musculoskeletal conditions. How exactly does somatic movement work? In order to be most effective, a somatic movement should be performed as slowly as possible. The human nervous system, which controls our posture and movement, must learn new things very slowly. With practice, we are able to gradually speed up and perform movements more quickly while still maintaining form and control. When we do movements quickly, we are not learning anything new—we are simply reinforcing existing learned patterns. Often we are not even conscious of our own patterns that reinforce less then optimal movement patterns, and having the outside practitioner role, guiding and supporting your unwinding process can be most beneficial Somatic Integration uses both hands-on movements, and self-care movements. The role of a somatic educator is to empower people to take care of themselves by teaching them the tools they need to stay out of pain and continue to improve their posture, movement, and function throughout their lives. A somatic educator will be able to gently suggest to your body, via verbal or hands on support, other possibilities of movement which your body has forgotten it knows, and in this way help to unwind, and release patterns of tension.
