The Healing Power of Craniosacral Therapy: Autonomic Nervous System Regulation.

Craniosacral Therapy Session. Working with the Cranial Nerves supporting Autonomic Nerves.

Embracing Regular Treatments

As a Craniosacral Practitioner, I prioritize regular treatment sessions. These sessions serve dual purposes for me. They support my health and allow me to conduct research. Each visit clarifies what it feels like to receive treatment. I carefully note the aspects I appreciate from my practitioner.

People often describe this work as subtle. However, now that I understand the sensations of change within my body, the differences are clear and radiant. Transitioning from a body that feels stuck or held to one of liquid wholeness was immense. There was a specific moment during my last session when everything changed. My practitioner positioned her hands under my sacrum and lower back. Everything felt good, but I didn't quite feel deeply connected. She simply waited, listened, and in that quiet space, my spine suddenly felt like liquid gold. I finally felt safe. Everything connected to become part of each other, achieving a state of oneness in my body. I slipped into a deep, dream-like state.

The Catalyst for Change - Autonomic Nervous System Balance.

I initially booked the session due to menstrual headaches. I suspected these were stress-induced. I knew that Craniosacral Therapy could resolve this issue. Biomechanically, I recognized that tension likely existed in my spinal dura, creating an imbalance in my membrane system. Blood supply could certainly improve. However, I also understood that the stillness and safety of a CST session would empower my body to reorganize itself back to health.

Stephen Porges, PhD, beautifully frames this concept in his foreword to Stanley Rosenberg's book, Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve. He points out that, "when the nervous system is manifest in a state of safety, there is a welcoming to touch, which can be used to align bodily structures and optimize autonomic function."

The Role of Stress in Health

Stress frequently plays a significant role in the dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. This manifests in many symptoms that clients seek treatment for at my clinic. The symptoms vary widely, from tight neck and shoulders to migraines, back pain, grinding teeth, irritability, and more. Other issues include feelings of heaviness or depression, sleeplessness, high blood pressure, digestive problems, excessive menstrual pain, and so on. The list also encompasses musculoskeletal conditions, emotional challenges, heart and lung issues, organ dysfunction, and behavioral problems. Mental health issues are often intertwined with these physical ailments. All these factors can strain interpersonal relationships, leading to even more stress. It creates a vicious cycle if not addressed with sensitivity and compassion.

Understanding the Interconnectedness of Symptoms

When dealing with body issues, one might assume that neck pain and constipation are unrelated. They might view these as separate issues. However, recognizing that a dysregulated autonomic nervous system significantly contributes to most issues puts you a step ahead. In such cases, a single treatment can be beneficial. However, if you have suffered from multiple problems long-term, a series of treatments may be necessary.

The Healing Process

Healing does not conclude when you leave the treatment table. Often, it may take one or two days for health to fully bloom and for noticeable relief to occur. Recognizing this post-treatment space is important for effective healing.

I have become familiar with my post-treatment pattern. I experience a period of downtime, followed by a gradual and distinct return to a better sense of well-being. Because the changes are internal—rather than through external adjustments or force—my body can maintain these changes longer. Each individual and treatment may follow a slightly different trajectory.

Craniosacral Therapy aims to cultivate a quality of exquisite safety for those receiving it. A sense of safety is crucial for our capacity to self-heal and regulate our nervous system. This approach allows us to address multiple symptoms simultaneously by focusing on the root causes.

In conclusion, if you hope to explore how craniosacral therapy can help you, consider giving it a try. Your body might just be waiting for that gentle touch to help it heal. Finding your own journey to wellness starts with understanding the importance of feeling safe in your body.

With the right support, healing is possible. Embrace the process and watch as your health flourishes.
